Angie Snook, former curator of the Geneseo Historical Museum, will speak at the Geneseo Public Library on Wednesday, March 26 at 2 pm. She will talk about the Underground Railroad.
Snook has devoted thousands of hours to researching American historical subjects in the Midwest and the South. She has given hundreds of programs to both children and adults on topics including the Underground Railroad, Orphan Train, Illinois Women, Mary Todd Lincoln and Abraham Lincoln. In addition to serving as the director of the Geneseo Historical Museum, Snook is a former school teacher in the Geneseo and Moline districts.
February 14, 2025 was declared "Angie Snook Day" in Geneseo by the Geneseo City Council to honor Snook. When she heard the news, she was surprised. "I'm very honored and very humbled, and it's really very kind of people to look at me with this perspective. I love my job and I was just doing my job."
The Underground Railroad was a network of secret routes and safe houses that helped enslaved African Americans escape to freedom beginning in the 17th century through the mid-19th century. Natural and man-made routes were used, including rivers, canals and trails plus safe houses and stations.
Mark your calendars! This will be a great program.
