Geneseo Public Library District
Board of Trustees Meeting
December 10, 2012
The Board of Trustees of the Geneseo Public Library met in regular session in Foundation Room B at the library on Monday, December 10, 2012. President Gary ZumMallen called the meeting to order at 6:01 p.m. Board members in attendance were Barbara Erdman, Darline Holland, Dave Johnson, Holly McAvoy and Gary ZumMallen. Absent were: Jan Dyke, who was recovering from knee surgery; and Mary Farrell, who was in the hospital.
No citizens were present.
The Board reviewed the minutes from November 15, 2012. One minor change was noted. Holly moved that the amended minutes be accepted; Darline seconded the motion and it passed by voice vote. A thank you note from the library staff was read.
Darline made a motion to pay the bills and accept the financial report; Barb seconded the motion and it passed by roll call vote.
During the meeting, it was noted that one of the new chairs was unsteady and needed to be adjusted. Claire will call Jeff Cedro.
Library Director’s Report
Please refer to the written report. Dave signed the Annual Report of Receipts and Disbursements, which will be printed in The Republic.
This coming Saturday, Santa will be at the library and children can have their pictures taken with him. Many people have commented that they appreciate this; the lines at the mall are long and the cost of photographs is expensive.
Claire’s suggestion about getting a Smart Board was discussed. It was determined that it would not be a good purchase now, but we will see what kind of demand there is for one in the future.
A bid for a sidewalk connecting our parking lot to St. Malachy’s was presented. There was discussion about the need for additional parking, so possibly the sidewalk could be done when the parking lot is added.
Claire obtained a quote for “grab bars,” bars which would be mounted in the bathroom stalls to assist older patrons. We provide many programs for senior citizens, and even though we have a handicapped bathroom, grab bars would be very helpful in the regular bathroom. Claire will first check with Clint Rice at the City about code.
Chris Thompson created a beautiful book shelf out of two wrought iron ends and wood from the first library. His labor and materials amounted to approximately $40. He can’t make book ends because they would need to be welded and would be cost prohibitive. It was decided that shelves would be presented to the Geneseo Communications Foundation, the Geneseo Foundation and the Geneseo Museum. Lisa Depies at The Republic will be contacted. Darline made a motion to ask Chris to create 12 book shelves and Holly seconded it. After some discussion, it was determined that there would be a need for more than 12, so Darline withdrew her initial motion and Holly withdrew her second. Darline then made a motion to ask Chris to build 24 shelves, which Holly seconded. It passed by voice vote. Darline made a motion that the shelves be sold for $100 each and Barb seconded the motion. After some discussion, Darline withdrew her motion and Barb withdrew her second. Darline then made a motion that the book shelves sell for $80. Barb seconded the motion and it passed by roll call vote.
A digital message board was discussed. Brant said he could mount a flat screen TV and put a computer in the back to run it. There was discussion about the exact location for it and the board walked out to the Circulation Desk to determine the best place for it. Claire will get more information for next month’s meeting.
Dave feels a Board photograph should be taken by a professional photographer. He will contact several local photographers for prices.
The flags on the bike racks snapped off in the wind. They need to be in place for when the parking lot gets plowed for snow. Claire will talk to Brant to see if he can repair them; Dave will check into stainless steel rods.
With no further business before the board, Barb moved to adjourn. Holly seconded the motion and in voice vote, all approved. The meeting adjourned at 7:01 p.m.
The next regular meeting will be on Monday, January 14, 2013 at 6:30 p.m.
